Launch SQL 2005 Database Tuning Advisor

we have 64 bit SQL 2005 Ent edition on x64 bit Win 2003 Ent edition
with SQL
05 SP1. try to launch Database Tuning Advisor from the Tools, then got
the
following error message box:
"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error
R6031 - Attempt to initialize the CRT more than once. This indicates a
bug
in your application"
Find out KB 913395, however there is no "Explorer.exe process" under
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers,
all I have are:
1. Default
2. D:\en_sql_2005_ent_x64_sp1\en_sql_server_sp1_x64.exe
Please advise.
ThanksPlease see the following mail thread

Sidenote:Unfortunately this really is an Appcompat issue and has
nothing to do with DTA, that is, this bug can be reproed using any
process

Launch condition to detect SQL CE?

I have written a .NET application that uses SQL Server Compact Edition. It's deployed by a MSI file (setup project in VS - not ClickOnce).

How do I add a SQL CE launch condition to my setup project?

Never mind. I'm now using the bootstrapper and added the SQL CE requirement there.sql

The version that installed at my computer has a number: 9.00.3033.00
Do Microsoft released Service pack 2 or has just released Service pack 1
till now.
Any help and support will be appreciated
The last version of SP2 hasn't been released yet so I doubt that you have

Largest SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Ed. Databases

I like to obtain information on several of the largest
SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition databases? With the
hardware specification and disk space (SAN, LUN, etc.)
they are using.
Also would be helpful the average number of transactions
per minute the server is handling.
If the application used a third party utility to enhance
application scheduling?
I would like to obtain this information for trading floor
application that I'm am working on.
Thanks,
MikeHi,

large varchar update fails on sql 2000 server, works on dev. machine

A production system (server 2003 enterprise edition) sql 2000 server,
service pack 4 won't update a sort of large varchar field, which works
fine on my development machine, (xp pro sql 2000).
try this in the query analyzer:
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[tbl_why] (
[pr_id] [int] IDENTITY (1, 1) NOT NULL ,
[pr_user_snapshot] [varchar] (2000) COLLATE
SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL
) ON [PRIMARY]
--create a row by entering something in the snapshot field like
"what the fu!$*!?"
--test this
declare @.pr_user_snapshot varchar(2000)
set @.pr_user_snapshot = '<tr><td>This renewal type named:</td><td
class=InputLabel >Annual Elevator Permit</td></tr><tr><td>is
associated with these applications:</td><td class=InputLabel
>Elevator</td></tr><tr><td>The renewal cycle is:</td><td

starting on:</td><td class=InputLabel >JAN 1</td></

print len(@.pr_user_snapshot)

...not brain surgery...
It updates to a blank, not null result. Somewhere around 800
characters the thing starts working on the server. Increasing the
field size makes no difference.
Is there some server setting I've missed that is set on my dev. box?
I can't find anything.

Perhaps, did you notice that the table is empty? This means you can't

I added this before the update
insert tbl_why
select 'bla'
and had no problem
So again are you sure the table is not empty?
Denis the SQL Menace
http://sqlservercode.blogspot.com/|||Thanks for checking.
I am sure the table is not empty.
As I said, it will start updating at around 800 characters, but the
string I'm using is showing a len of around 1550.
Are YOU on a server? - this works for me on my local machine but not
on either of 2 servers (as described) I need to get this going on.
Seems like a setting but what?

> I added this before the update
> insert tbl_why
> select 'bla'
> and had no problem
> So again are you sure the table is not empty?|||Script the entire DDL for the table, including triggers. I suspect either a
poorly written trigger or multiple tables with the same name but different
owners. Both are a frequent cause of unexpected behavior. Your own
statements did not fully qualify the table.
If you still can't figure it out, then I suggest you create/run a complete
script to reproduce the problem. This includes the table creation DDL,
which you yourself run on the "server" in question and verify as acting in
the manner described. A script similar to the one your posted (but with
an insert statement and fully qualified tablenames) works correctly on 2000
sp3a. I seriously doubt that the version of sql server or the OS has
anything to do with the issue.

Perhaps, did you notice that the table is empty? This means you can't
update can you?

I am sure the table is not empty.
As I said, it will start updating at around 800 characters, but the
string I'm using is showing a len of around 1550.
Are YOU on a server? - this works for me on my local machine but not
on either of 2 servers (as described) I need to get this going on.
Seems like a setting but what?

|||Script the entire DDL for the table, including triggers.
A script similar to the one your posted (but with
an insert statement and fully qualified tablenames) works correctly on 2000
sp3a. I seriously doubt that the version of sql server or the OS has
anything to do with the issue.

large varchar update fails on sql 2000 server, works on dev. machine

A production system (server 2003 enterprise edition) sql 2000 server,
service pack 4 won't update a sort of large varchar field, which works
fine on my development machine, (xp pro sql 2000).
try this in the query analyzer:
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[tbl_why] (
[pr_id] [int] IDENTITY (1, 1) NOT NULL ,
[pr_user_snapshot] [varchar] (2000) COLLATE
SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL

Large MSMerge_History, MSMerge_genhistory,MSRepl_errors tables in SQL Server 2005 Express ed

SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition act as publisher and distributor.
All subscribers are SQL Server 2005 Express Edition.
According to 2005 book online, "MSMerge_History table exists in distribution database". Howevey I found this table in Subscriber database which is in SQL Server 2005 Express Edition.
The problem is this table (MSMerge_History) and other two tables (MSMerge_genhistory, MSRepl_errors) are quite large. We want to keep SQL Server 2005 Express database as small as possible so we can put more data into it.
Is there anyway (Manually or automatically) to clean those tables in SQL Server 2005 Express? Please help.

On the subscriber typically 10 sessions worth of data are stored in MSmerge_history.

Are you running the merge agent in continuous mode by any chance? If so, the table could grow.

You can manually delete the entries in MSmerge_history and MSRepl_errors as they are for history purposes.

MSmerge_genhistory should NOT be touched. You should allow this table to be cleaned up by the merge agent. One thing that may help you is to reduce the retention period of the publication. However this has the side effect that if any subscriber comes to sync after the retention period, it will be expired and needs to be reinitialized. Choose a value that suits your needs.

Thanks Mahesh. I do appreciate your help.
